Faith Olympics Week Activities for Families

The Olympic spirit is alive and well, and you can bring it home to your family with a Faith Olympics Week! Imagine the excitement of competitive games infused with the teachings of our Lord. Not only will your children be racing to victory, but they'll also be racing towards a deeper understanding of faith, kindness, and Biblical truths. With every event, they will earn points, and accolades, and learn something valuable about walking with God.

Biblical Foundation

Before diving into the fun, let’s ground ourselves in God’s Word. Hebrews 12:1–2 (NIV) provides a beautiful metaphor for our spiritual race:

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith."

As we prepare for our Faith Olympics, this scripture serves as a reminder that we are in a spiritual race together, as a family, encouraging one another in faith.

The Core Concept/Game

The Faith Olympics won’t just be about physical activity. Each event will connect to scriptural lessons and will conclude with discussions on the spiritual implications of sportsmanship, teamwork, and perseverance.

Events to Include

  1. Sprints of Faith (Running Races): Along the path, set markers with questions about Bible stories or memory verses. When your child reaches a marker, they answer a question before continuing.

  2. Tower of Scripture (Building/Stacking): Use building blocks or books to create a tower. Each block has a verse or a quality to embody (like "love" or "kindness").

  3. Relay of Prayer (Team Prayers): In this event, each family member says a line from a prayer, creating a collective prayer experience that emphasizes collaboration and unity.

  4. Obstacle Course of Patience: Set up an obstacle course where, for each challenge, a candidate must recite a Bible verse before proceeding.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Plan the Week

Start by blocking off your calendar for a week of Faith Olympics. Involve your kids in the planning process—let them help decide which events to include.

Step 2: Gather Supplies

You will need items based on the chosen events. Common supplies include:

  • Running shoes or outdoor space for races
  • Stacking materials (like blocks, empty shoeboxes, or stacks of books)
  • Softballs, frisbees, or hula hoops for challenges
  • Markers and poster boards for creating scripture cards

Step 3: Create Event Sign-Ups

Make it exciting! Have your kids sign up for events while creating a “spiritual Olympics” banner. Use colored paper or a digital application to decorate it.

Step 4: Assign Roles

Designate roles based on skills—one child can be the timer while another might be the judge, responsible for enforcing the rules and keeping track of who earns points.

Step 5: Begin Each Event with a Scripture

Before starting each event, share the relevant Bible verse. This will establish a spiritual foundation and provide context for why we engage in these activities. For example, before the Relay of Prayer, read Philippians 4:6–7 (NIV):

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."

Step 6: Close with Discussion

After each event, discuss what each game teaches about our faith and how it relates to God's Word. Encourage your children to share their thoughts on each event’s moral.

Advanced Variations/Levels

To keep the excitement going and to deepen understanding, introduce advanced levels:

  1. Point System: Assign points for participation and good sportsmanship. Each family member can earn points not only for winning but also for encouraging others.

  2. Badges: Create badges for achievements such as "Prayer Warrior" for the Relay of Prayer or "Scripture Scholar" for answering tough Biblical questions in Sprints of Faith.

  3. Quests: Give your child small quests during the week, like family service projects or Bible reading time, with point rewards for completion. Consider using my article on the Bible Reading Challenge for Families: A Fun Parent-Led Reward System for ideas.

  4. Team Split: If you have multiple children, divide them into teams and create friendly competitions. This builds camaraderie and emphasizes teamwork.

Real Family Scenarios

Imagine a rainy day preventing outdoor activities. Instead, your family embraces a “Faith Olympics” indoor edition. The Sprints of Faith become quick runs through the living room, dodging pillows as “hurdles,” while clearing “hoops” through paper plates to reach your target destination.

During the Tower of Scripture, each time a child stacks a block, they share a verse they’ve memorized, culminating in a grand tower constructed of faith.

Reflect on your family's dynamics—do your kids butter up the prize or mission at stake, perhaps with a fun surprise that links back to your family values?

The potential is endless, whether it’s an indoor scavenger hunt or a sprightly prayer wall during the rainy Faith Olympics.

Devotional Closing

As you engage your family in these activities, remember that teaching your children about God doesn’t always have to be a solemn affair. Joy and fun can coexist with spiritual instruction. Proverbs 22:6 (NIV) beautifully reinforces this idea:

"Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it."

Take this opportunity to reinforce those lessons while creating memories that will last a lifetime.

A Simple Prayer to Conclude:

"Dear Lord, thank You for the joy of sharing our faith as a family. Help us as we embark on this Faith Olympics Week to bond and grow closer to You and each other. May we run this race of faith together, celebrating victories and learning from our challenges. In Jesus' name, Amen."

Bring the spirit of competition and cooperation into your home, and may your Faith Olympics Week not only be engaging but also a profound journey in faith for every family member!
